The Unbearable Lightness of Crashing di James J. Butler e Charles Austin Muir

“L’insostenibile leggerezza dello schianto”, cosi il titolo in italiano, è un vero e proprio tributo ironico.

James e Charles sono cresciuti guardando lo stuntman Evel Knievel. Passarono gli anni e si dimenticarono di com’era seguire i salti mortali in moto di Knievel in televisione. Poi James rispolverò la sua replica degli anni ’90 della moto da acrobazie giocattolo di Evel Knievel del 1973 e fece catturare a Charles uno dei salti giocattolo in video. Guardando il filmato iniziale, hanno trovato qualcosa di così gioioso e di ridicolmente suspense nel momento in cui “Mini Evel” ha lasciato la rampa e si è librato su una fila di veicoli giocattolo. Ce l’avrebbe fatta? Si sarebbe schiantato? Come sarebbe atterrato? E come mai James e Charles si sono immedesimati a un livello così martellante con un pezzo di plastica? Per rispondere a quest’ultima domanda, hanno realizzato questo film ironico, in stile art house, che celebra “Mini Evel” e il suo eroico riflesso della lotta umana.

James J. Butler è professore di fisica presso la Pacific University, dove ha sviluppato e implementato metodi di insegnamento innovativi e costruito un programma di successo di ricerca sui materiali ottici. Combina le sue passioni per la fisica e le motociclette attraverso la sua ricerca, che si concentra sullo sviluppo di tessuti ad alta velocità e autoriparanti per indumenti protettivi per motociclette. Oppure, come dicono i suoi studenti, James sta sviluppando abiti da supereroe.

Charles Austin Muir è l’autore di “This Is a Horror Book e Slippery When Metastasized”. Ha letto il suo racconto “The Time I Took Hamlet Right into the Danger Zone”, su una motocicletta a velocità superiore quella della luce, in una presentazione divertente che ha tenuto con James Butler. Ha lavorato come scrittore di necrologi, scrittore freelance e istruttore di esercizi terapeutici.

“The unbearable lightness of the crashing is a real ironic tribute.

James and Charles grew up watching stuntman Evel Knievel. Years went by and they forgot what it was like to watch Knievel’s motorcycle flips on television. Then James dusted off his 1990s replica of Evel Knievel’s 1973 toy stunt cycle and had Charles capture one of the toy jumps on video. Watching the opening footage, they found something so joyful and ridiculously suspense the moment “Mini Evel” left the ramp and hovered over a line of toy vehicles. Would he have made it? Would it crash? How would it land? And why did James and Charles identify on such a pounding level with a piece of plastic? To answer this last question, they made this ironic, art house-style film that celebrates “Mini Evel” and its heroic reflection of human struggle.

James J. Butler is a professor of physics at Pacific University, where he developed and implemented innovative teaching methods and built a successful research program on optical materials. He combines his passions for physics and motorcycles through his research, which focuses on the development of high-speed and self-healing fabrics for protective clothing for motorcycles. Or, as his students say, James is developing superhero outfits.

Charles Austin Muir is the author of “This Is a Horror Book and Slippery When Metastasized”. He read his short story “The Time I Took Hamlet Right into the Danger Zone”, on a faster than light speed motorcycle, in a funny presentation he gave with James Butler. He has worked as an obituary writer, freelance writer, and therapeutic exercise instructor.
